Orthopedic & Spine Center of Wisconsin emphasizes expertise and care to keep athletes in the game
MADISON (April 17, 2025) – As the spring sports season ramps up across the state, the Orthopedic & Spine Centers of Wisconsin (OSCW) is proud to spotlight its expert team—including Dr. James Prosser, DO, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine; Dr. Kashif Ali, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine; and Dr. Aaron Carpiaux, MD, a sports medicine physician who also provides general orthopedic care for athletes of all ages. Together, they bring extensive experience to support athletes from injury prevention through full recovery.
With a patient-first approach and a strong emphasis on collaboration across disciplines, OSCW provides the high-quality orthopedic care athletes need to return to their activities as quickly and safely as possible. The team understands the importance of fast, effective treatment—and, more importantly, the value of injury prevention.
Dr. Prosser treats a wide range of complex shoulder and knee conditions, including ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, cartilage procedures, and joint stabilization. He stresses that injury prevention starts well before game day.
“Off-season preparation is one of the best ways to avoid injuries,” said Dr. Prosser. “That includes structured stretching and strengthening programs, participating in multiple sports to cross-train different muscle groups and easing into activities with a gradual return—rather than going full speed on day one.”
Dr. Ali, who treats a broad range of injuries, including rotator cuff tears, meniscus injuries, ACL tears, and arthritis, emphasizes the importance of proper warm-ups and conditioning to prevent injuries.
“Injury prevention starts with proper warm-up routines that include light aerobic activity and dynamic stretching,” said Dr. Ali. “But it doesn’t stop there—strength and conditioning programs that focus on form, core strength and joint stability are essential. Recovery, rest, nutrition and hydration are also key components of a safe season.”
Dr. Carpiaux, who specializes in both sports medicine and general orthopedics, advises athletes to ease back into activities gradually to avoid overuse injuries, particularly in spring sports that require sudden physical demands.
“My advice for athletes, both students and adults, is to get back into activities slowly. Many sports in the spring require athletes to hit the ground running after a long winter, and that can lead to injury,” said Dr. Carpiaux. “Listening to your body and performing adequate warm-ups and stretches are crucial. Additionally, adults returning to weekend sports should avoid overdoing it and make sure to ease into physical activity.”
Dr. Carpiaux also recommends the RICE method—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation—as the first step if an athlete is injured. “If symptoms don’t improve after 24 to 48 hours, or if there is significant deformity, an orthopedic consultation may be necessary. X-rays can rule out fractures and a proper rehab program can prevent long-term issues,” he added.
OSCW offers a full spectrum of orthopedic services beyond sports injury care. From physical therapy and occupational therapy to surgical solutions for musculoskeletal conditions, every patient receives coordinated care from diagnosis to recovery. This integrated approach ensures that patients benefit from the collective expertise of the entire team.
